Like many pet food consumers, for many years I was a very unaware pet food consumer. The moment my dog had his first dry kibble has been etched in my memory. He was ecstatic, absolutely loved and ate every last piece of his food. Seeing firsthand the happiness that my pet experienced, thorough examination of ingredients in pet food never crossed my mind for years.
Going through college and onto my career in the financial world, nutrition started to interest me. I discovered that including greens and healthy fats made me feel better, more productive and helped in sustaining long working hours as well as the mental and physical stamina.
Still, being educated in the basics of human nutrition, it never crossed my mind to examine the pet food labels. For years I’d assumed that meat in pet food is of the same standard that is available to humans. I was wrong.
So what is 3D and 4D meat?
3D stands for Dead, Down, Diseased.
4D stands for Dead, Down, Diseased and Dying.
These types of meats do not make it into the human-grade market and are sold to other markets, including pet food. These meat by-products are denatured with colorants to differentiate and indicate that these meats are feed-grade, not suitable for human consumption.
Rendered Meats Sourced from Animal Shelters
Here, the Environmental Protection Agency, gives a list of sources for these by-product non human-grade meats. “Independent plants obtain animal by-product materials, including grease, blood, feathers, offal, and entire animal carcasses, from the following sources: butcher shops, supermarkets, restaurants, fast-food chains, poultry processors, slaughterhouses, farms, ranches, feedlots, and animal shelters.”
This ultimately means that it is perfectly legal to be sourcing by-product meats from animal shelters, which could include euthanized pets. It is important to understand the low bar set for the by-product meat sources used in pet food.
Does Bobcat Raw Food use 3D or 4D meats?
Absolutely not! We only use highest quality human-grade meats and organs, the same you would find at finest restaurants and in home cooked meals. We believe that feeding low quality meats can have negative long-term effects. Our pets deserve the very best ingredients in their food, so that they can thrive and have a high quality of life.
Importance of High-Quality Human-Grade Meats
Human-grade meats are considerably more expensive than 3D and 4D meats. Pet food industry is highly competitive, with companies trying to get the best product at the cheapest possible cost. This is why it is important to make sure the ingredients in your pet food are suitable for human consumption.
We want our consumers to know that we never use 3D or 4D meats. We believe that our pets deserve the very best in their food. All of our meals are made with 100% human-grade USDA Grade A meats, always sourced in the United States. In addition, we never add grains or other carbohydrates that we believe have no place in an obligate carnivore diet.
In addition to high-quality standards, Bobcat Raw Food meals are all pre-portioned into small 3 ounce containers. This gives customers the confidence without using the scale as to the amount you are feeding your cat, without overfeeding or underfeeding.
We believe in treating your pets the same way we treat our own. Our meals are always handmade in small batches, immediately frozen and arrive to your door nice and fresh.
